The Friends of Sandbanks and Sandbanks Provincial Park celebrated 22 years of hosting the Sandbanks Fall Getaway 10 km and 5 km Fun Run, as well as The Terry Fox Run, Sunday, at the park.
“It was such a great day and event with a wonderful group of participants,” said Agnese Bortolussi, race director. “We had 209 runners registered for both events and 190 crossed the finish line.”
The participants raised approximately $2,800 for the Friends and about $26,600 for the Terry Fox Run between pledges and donations on the day.
The run started in 1995 as a fundraiser for The Friends of Sandbanks and as a means of attracting tourists. Later it also became an official Terry Fox Run.
“It’s been a great success on both counts. Over the years, we have raised about $16,000 for The Friends of Sandbanks and about $140,000 for The Terry Fox Run through our participants donating and registering their pledges through this event,” said Bortolussi.
The run is a favourite as it is quite flat and takes participants along the scenic shores of Lake Ontario, through Sandbanks Provincial Park.
“The local sponsors who have been so generous with donations and prizes, as well as the friendly volunteers are the real reason why this run is so popular,” says Bortolussi. “Without their help, this just would not be possible.”
