Family of five escapes house fire

A family of five became homeless in -18C temperatures when fire broke out in the upstairs of their residence on Cassino Drive, Picton before 7 p.m. Wednesday.
A neighbour reports Mom, Dad and three children were able to get out of their home safely and are spent the night with family. Deputy Fire Chief Robert Rutter said it is a good example of why everybody should maintain working smoke alarms in their homes.
About 20 Prince Edward County firefighters knocked the blaze down quickly, stopping its spread throughout the six-plex. They worked in extreme cold, with no injuries in slippery, dangerous conditions. Fire damage to the home and smoke in the connected home is estimated at $75,000.
A Facebook group has been set up to assist the family with clothing, toys and furniture needs. http://www.facebook.com/groups/435268146543885/
