Feed the Meter funds raise $2,881 for healthy snacks at schools

Mayor Steve Ferguson and students at St. Gregory Catholic School present Food for Learning with $2,881.35 raised during the annual Feed the Meter campaign in December, when parking fees collected in Picton are donated to school nutrition programs in PrinceEdwardCounty.

Supporters of the ‘Feed the Meter’ campaign in December raised $2,881.35 for school food programs in Prince Edward County.

“A fabulous success of Food for Learning’s Feed The Meter campaign is a result of the generous community support in all three communities,” said Vicky Struthers, Food for Learning Community Development Co-ordinator with the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation.

Proceeds from the County, Belleville and Quinte West raised a total of $37,502.93 through meter donations, sponsor donations and community donations.

“Thank you to all members of the community who helped raise these funds by putting their change in the parking meters and to all sponsors and municipalities who continuously support our efforts,” said Struthers. “You made this campaign a success. Our students will eat well because of you! Thank you!”

Food for Learning programs help provide students in the communities with universal access to healthy meals and snacks while at school in an effort to help develop healthy lifelong eating habits, be engaged in their learning and feel a sense of belonging while at school.

Struthers said the Feed the Meter campaign would not have been possible without the support of the many campaign sponsors.
