Fire flow water testing this week

Fire hydrant flow testing and rating is under way in Picton/Bloomfield, Wellington, Consecon/Carrying Place and Rossmore/Fenwood Gardens drinking water systems the week of June 17-21.
Flow testing and rating is conducted to support fire protection. Fire fighters use the fire hydrant rating results to anticipate the water supply available through a hydrant when they arrive at the scene of a fire.
To conduct fire hydrant flow testing, certified drinking water operators will be operating select hydrants throughout the distribution system.
During hydrant fire flow testing, customers are asked to avoid excessive water use (Example: running tap water for extended periods, using the washing machine and dish washer simultaneously).
Like with other water distribution system maintenance, fire flow testing can disturb deposits that normally occur in the water pipes of the distribution system.
Customers in the immediate area where flow tests are being conducted may experience intermittent pressure fluctuations and some discolouration of tap water while flushing is being completed.
If coloured water has been experienced, customers should run the cold water tap closest to the water meter for a few minutes until tap water runs clear. Customers are advised to wait until the water runs clear at the tap before doing laundry or running the dishwasher.
