Floundering Frieda returns as Cherry Valley’s harbinger of spring

Floundering Frieda has returned. The Athol Recreation Committee has resurrected “Floundering Frieda”, the Cherry Valley tradition of placing a mermaid on East Lake ice and guessing when she will drop through. From his Outlet home, councilor Jamie Forrester kept an eye on eco-friendly, wooden Frieda who is rigged with a clock to record exactly when she takes the plunge. Cherry Valley resident Janet Elson, above right, guessed the closest time and date to win half the 50/50 in Frieda’s first year back. Tom Sheil, owner of Cherry Valley Springs Restaurant sold her the winning guess ballet and Janet says she’ll use some of her prize money to treat herself to breakfast there. Janet Davies, above left, of Athol Recreation Committee says the other half of the 50/50 goes toward more community events and activities. Davis said Frieda could not be in the photo as she is celebrating her freedom and the arrival of spring. -Graham Davies photo
