Free fraud prevention drop-in – Oct. 23

Drop-in for a seniors-focused event about fraud prevention Monday, Oct. 23rd at the Giant Tiger parking lot, Main Street, Picton.

From noon-2p.m., representatives from the OPP and TD Bank will offer information and guidance on how to prevent becoming a victim of a targeted scam.

“Unfortunately, it’s all too common to read about another senior being scammed out of their money,” said Mark Rose, Picton Business Improvement Association Manager. “Anything we can do as a business community to negate our community members becoming victims is helpful, and it starts by sharing as much information as possible to ensure folks know what to look and listen for, so they don’t become the next target.”

Rose says that almost on a weekly basis, a business in the community prevents someone from becoming a scam victim.

“We owe it to our community to provide as much information as possible – both to businesses and residents.”

Prince Edward OPP Community Safety and Media Officer Aaron Miller said the local reports and numbers are a real concern.

“The number of fraud reports continues to be staggering. The OPP continues to work with our partners to educate everyone about fraud investigations. Fraudsters continue to evolve and improve at what they do. Anyone is a target and we all need to be aware.”

Jennifer Thompson is the store manager at Picton’s Giant Tiger and sees first-hand how fraud and scams are affecting her customers and the community.

“At Giant Tiger we are committed to giving back and making a difference in the communities we call home. We ensure that the ways we are contributing to our community are providing tangible and lasting changes that truly impact our customers and the community at large. This initiative is one we are proud to be hosting.”

While the event is focused on seniors, businesses and residents of all ages are encouraged to stop by to learn more.
