Point Petre took a major bashing Saturday morning – trash bashing that is.
The clean up idea came about through the Facebook public group “Friends of The Point… Peter that is!” and was a fall cleaning at the popular location on the south shore of Prince Edward County.
Earlier this summer, signs were posted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry that ended overnight camping noting “no person shall enter or be on this property for any activity from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily”.
“A number of people were complaining about how much garbage was out there and about how you couldn’t camp there overnight anymore,” said organizer Dave Tugwood. “I just figured it was pointless talking and complaining so I committed myself to doing something about it and challenged others to stop talking about it and do something about it.”
The Facebook page grew quiet a bit after his challenge, he noted, but he offered his thanks to a few who worked with him for several hours filling more than 10 bags of garbage to be loaded onto his trailer and taken to the Milford dump.
Tugwood’s intention was not to clean up the entire area, but to concentrate on the beaches, the small patches of vegetation next to the beaches and the waterfront trail.
“A few visitors unaware of the event were good enough to toss a few bits into the trailer too,” he said. – Dave Tugwood photo

Thank-You, kind human friends.
Thank you, good people! I don’t know what they think is going to happen to garbage they leave behind, but it doesn’t magically disappear. It’s great that some people care enough about the Point to try to wipe out traces of those who don’t.
First thank you for saying Point Peter which we all 3rd 4th and 5th generation residents know it as.
The whole south shore of the county is in the same mess. Hundreds of people visit these areas every summer and leave their garage broken bottles and destroy trees etc. Who are they, mostly none residents who have found these places to camp free with no supervision. But not all are non residents. I am afraid some are our own residents.
KUDO,S
I would support a ban on all vehicular traffic from the shoreline area . Shame on the MNR for not taking a stronger position. Abuse of this property has been going on for years and they have turned a blind eye to it.
Great job! Thank you folks!!
