Friends of Macaulay Heritage Park in Picton continue their work on the Adopt-A-Plot program at the St. Mary Magdalene Church Cemetery next door.
“Adopt-A-Plot was started in 2012. The church yard markers were cross-referenced against photograph records and we probed to see if we could find signs of old markers under the soil between stones,” said Nancy Woods, past chairperson of the program. “Our work plan includes remapping the position of existing markers, doing condition reports on the stones, finding markers or history for burials listed to 1903 and continuing to research the lives of the families.”
The Pierce family were adopted last month and the Walmsley family in June. Other adoptions have included Phillip Low, Garrett Moore, Thomas Wycott, David Smith, John McCaw and the Macaulay’s.
If you have family who attended the old St. Mary Magdalene Church or were buried in the church yard, the program organizers and volunteers would appreciate having stories and photographs to add to their research.
If you would like to Adopt-A-Plot to help maintain the cemetery, contact Nancy Woods at 613-476-4775.
