Garrett’s Legacy Act passes second reading

Legislation to require all movable soccer goal nets in Ontario to be anchored received second reading in the legislature Thursday.
The bill, put forward by MPP Todd Smith, received second reading last December but was put aside due to the election.
Garrett’s Legacy Act was re-introduced by MPP Stan Cho as Smith, who is now Government House Leader, and can no longer bring bills forward.
“Thanks Stan Cho for carrying the torch on legislation that will require moveable soccer goals to be anchored in Ontario,” tweeted Smith this morning. “Garrett Mills, 15, was killed last year when a soccer goal collapsed on him.”
Dave and Gwen Mills were at the legislature for the reading Their son Garrett died last summer in Napanee when an unanchored soccer goal came down and crushed his skull. He had never played soccer, he was doing chin-ups on the goal when it collpsed.
Following the incident, the Prince Edward County Soccer Association anchored its nets. Soccer is played in theCounty on six fields by an average of 1,000 children.
