Wendy Lane, the County’s Grants, Contracts and Special Projects Co-ordinator has successful in obtaining several federal grants for projects.
Council is expected to approve receipt of grants for the rehabilitation of Benson Park and for assessible washrooms in Ameliasburgh Tuesday night at Shire Hall.
Approval of a grant for $133,200 – representing 33 per cent of the estimated $400,000 project costs – was received from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The project has also been endorsed by community groups with financial commitments of $80,000 toward the project. The municipal share of $186,800 was approved in the 2017 budget.
The project plan links the new King Street parking lot through a revitalized park, beside new public washrooms and through an accessible, rehabilitated pathway to Main Street. The tennis court is also to be refurbished into a multi-sport court. The project will be partially completed by July 1 for Canada’s 150th celebrations, will full completion by March 31, 2018.
A $25,000 grant was approved from the Federal Enabling Accessibility Fund toward an assessible entrance and washrooms at the Ameliasburgh museum site.
The museum’s outdoor washrooms are assessible, but do not meet the full standards and are not open from October to April. During those months, people with disabilities are directed to the town hall about a block away.
The capital project estimate is $40,000. Three quotes ranged from $28,000 to $70,000 but did not include electrical required to activate the door and adjustments to the water line to ensure that only the line to the museum is open during winter months.
Friday, the county also received $22,896 in funding to study a public transit plan for the County.
