Hare-larious family fun at egg-ceptional Easter hunt

Story and photos by Sharon Harrison
The Easter bunny was a busy bunny this weekend juggling lots of chocolate eggs in areas all over the County all while hoping to stay dry. But the skill of juggling raindrops wasn’t needed as he brought a little sunshine to Picton, albeit with a biting cold wind.

While it was cooler than most would have liked, thankfully the rain held off Saturday morning for the annual Picton Firefighters’ Association Easter egg hunt held at the Picton Fairgrounds.

While a nice warm, sunny spring day would have been ideal, the part-overcast, part-sunny chilly morning didn’t deter those children and families, baskets and vessels in hand, that made it out. They came in search of all things eggs and chocolate for this most egg-stravagant event – with all those foil-covered chocolate eggs donated by Picton’s Giant Tiger.

A little community idea hatched by the Picton Firefighters’ Association every year, always an egg-clusive favourite among local families every Easter long weekend, provided a cracking good time – cracking good prizes too.

Winner of the bicycle was seven-year-old Orval Mattis from Picton.

The purchase of a raffle ticket provided a chance to win a prize in the random ticket draw. An egg-ceptional bicycle and a wagon were up for grabs, donated by the eggs-perts at Picton Home Hardware.

At almost egg-sactly 10 o’clock, the first of the two egg hunts for those age five and under took place in the fenced play area where the egg-citement could barely be contained, the turnout egg-squisite as the joyous hare-raising egg-sploring began for all the egg-cited littlest ones.

It was followed by the second egg hunt right after on the nearby lawn of the Crystal Palace for those aged six to 11 years, where at the sound of the fire engine siren, kids scrambled and searched, hatching their plan of attack as clutches of eggs were retrieved.

The fun-filled, egg-stra special morning brought egg-ceedingly good hauls of eggs for everyone, especially since attendance was clearly down from past years which wasn’t egg-cellent, but it meant more eggs for everyone (and more chance to win a prize with increased odds).

For those who didn’t manage to hop over to Picton, many communities around the County hosted Easter egg hunts this weekend, including in Northport, Ameliasburgh, Macaulay Village and Wellington.
