Hundreds were at the Essroc arena in Wellington for a day of celebrating the Prince Edward County Minor Hockey Association’s 25th. A special banner was unveiled marking the milestone year since the Picton and Wellington hockey associations combined.
“Everyone said this wasn’t going to work,” said Mayor Robert Quaiff before a ceremonial puck drop. “But it did. And it worked well.”
The former Picton and Wellington association presidents Judy Blemkie and Harley Holmes started meetings in 1990.
“They stuck to it and made it happy and they did this without email or cell phones which I cannot fathom,” said PECMHA president Darren Marshall.
“There continues to be many challenges facing small town hockey across Canada, but each PECMHA executive in the future will focus on building on the legacy of the first 25 years making hockey enjoyable and affordable in Prince Edward County.”
