Hospital Auxiliary celebrates 80 years of making a difference

The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary celebrated 80 years of making a difference in the County.

A large crowd enjoyed lunch at the Isaiah Tubbs Resort and watched the 80th Anniversary video ( below ). The celebration was capped with an amusing and inspirational address by Marion Timmermans.

Auxiliary president Peggy Payne and vice-president Liz Jones led the celebrations and honoured a number of the Auxiliary’s past presidents, including Evelyn Beaumont, Barb Claxton, Fran Donaldson, Evelyn Drew, Betty Evans, Nancy Hicks, Carol Ireland, Sue Law, Elayne Meharg, Joyce Minaker and Wanda Strachan.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the hospital board formed in 1919 when the hospital first opened, but today’s members are honouring the 80th anniversary of the newly formed Prince Edward County Hospital Women’s Hospital Auxiliary on October 27, 1934.

Under the theme “Celebrating 80 Years of Caring”, the auxiliary created a video telling stories of past and present and honouring the volunteers who make it all unfold.

The auxiliary has raised well over $2 million for equipment and needs over the years at Picton’s hospital.

Catherine Walker, who first made the proposal to create the celebration video, was honoured with an Auxiliary ‘Mae West Award’ earlier this year.

President Payned said Walker was thinking there might be five people willing to speak on tape. When she received the schedule of 18 people, over three days of filming, she demonstrated the responsibility, hard work ethic, and resolve of Mae West. On her own time, she edited hours of video down to the 16 minutes, that you enjoyed today.”
