Kate, of Glenwood, killed by predator

Glenwood Cemetery this morning reported the death of “Kate”, its Chinese Swan goose – attacked and killed Tuesday night (June 20) by an unknown predator that dug a hole under the fence to gain entrance to the pond enclosure.

Sandy Latchford, chair of the Glenwood Board noted the geese are more vulnerable to attack at night by wild animals such as raccoons.

“That is why we were trying to train them to go into the hut for the night. Sadly we were too late,” she said. “We are working with Sandy Pines Wildlife Sanctuary to have “William” moved there as soon as possible and will keep the public informed about future plans for him.”

MAY 31 – The Glenwood Cemetery is beginning the process of moving geese William and Kate to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre while work is being done on their pond.

“The process to move them takes a considerable amount of time as they need to be trained to go into their ‘goose house’ so they can be confined pending pickup and the move to Sandy Pines,” said Sandy Latchford, chair of the Glenwood board.

Work is expected to begin this fall but Latchford said it is desirable to move the geese now so they can get used to their temporary home.

“We will keep the public updated as to how they are enjoying their temporary home and when they will return.”

For Kate, it is a return to home as she arrived from Sandy Pines in 2015 as “Kate the second”. William and the original Kate had lived at the pond for about 15 years. She was killed by youth in a tragic incident at Glenwood in 2015. William stopped eating and continued to cry out for his mate until the new princess arrived. Kate the second had also lost the love of her life, the same year, to a hungry fox.

The two were smitten at first honk.

When my son was sleigh riding I saw a fox run to the cemetery. Made me think of William and Kate being in danger from it.

I cut grass for years at Glenwood, and the fox holes/dens are unbelievable there! My guess it was a fox.
