Much-needed renovations to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital staff lounge – complete with a new kitchen – have been finished, thanks to funding from a concert in memory of County fiddler extraordinaire Zeke Mazurek and the local hospital auxiliary.
At last year’s Oct. 30 concert, Picton United Church was packed with more than 700 people – 250 of them participating – in memory of Mazurek. The event was produced by friend and fellow musician Suzanne Pasternak and other organizers to offer a huge thank you to the medical staff of Picton hospital for taking good care of Mazurek, Mark Despault and family, opera singer Janis Orenstein from Black River, and Pasternak herself, all in the month of October 2010. The concert raised more than $7,000 and it was the wish of Zeke’s widow, Danyne, that the hospital staff should choose how the money would be spent. With an additional donation of approximately $10,000 by the hospital auxiliary, the renovations were complete.
