A last-chance (for 2011) two-day blitz to collect televisions and electronics last weekend at the Picton Home Hardware welcomed 400 vehicles that carried in three trailers of electronic waste.
Linda Ryan, Waste Management Supervisor for the County, says the unofficial weight collected is between 13-17 tonnes of material which would gain roughly “$3-4,000 for the volunteers charities.
“Sonrise Christian Academy, the Picton Firefighters and Hallowell Firefighters Associations, Home Hardware, the PECM Hospital Foundation and the Kinsmen Club of Picton all had fun and slugged the heavy stuff all for a good cause,” Ryan said. “The weather held out Saturday, but was nicer on Sunday and we collected far more than I had anticipated. We certainly appreciate the county residents’ support, in bring out their stuff to help make this a profitable event, coming into the Christmas season. As well, it is an easy way to contribute to the cause, as these electronics need to be properly disposed of anyway, without having to open their wallets.”
All donations stay in the County to support local Christmas charities and the hospital foundation. This last event was sponsored by the volunteer groups who participated this year and also by Home Hardware who offer the parking lot.
Proceeds to help the PEC Hospital Foundation, the Salvation Army Kettle Campaign, the CAS Angel Fund, the Kinsmen Christmas Basket Campaign and the Local Church Christmas Dinner.
Acceptable items included TVs, Desktop and Handheld Computers, Portable Computers, Computer Peripherals, Monitors, Printing/Photocopying Devices, Telephones and Cell Phones, Cameras, Radios, Stereo and and Video Equipment.
