Main Street project to be completed in three phases

Winter has officially begun, though the mild weather begs to differ and Picton’s Business Improvement Association has its eyes on spring.

Among more than 30 items on its agenda of the first planning meeting for the Main Street Rehabilitation project was the construction schedule.

The $4.4 million tender for the project was awarded to Taggart Construction. The project includes infrastructure upgrades – water main, sanitary sewer services, roadways, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street lights. It is partially funded – $2 million – by a governmentgrant.

Taggart provided a loose timeline of the phases on the project to inform businesses of the plans – inclusive of the pause during July and August. A public meeting is to be held in mid to late January to present more details.

Each of three phases is expected to take one to two months. Phase one from Bridge Street to Ross Street is expected to begin in April. Ross Street to Elizabeth comprises phase two, then the road will be temporarily paved for the summer months. Phase three is for Elizabeth to Chapel street. Some overlap may be expected due to the condensed timeframe.

In the weeks ahead, the municipality and the BIA will continue to meet to produce plans for parking, signage, temporary water service and accessibility.
