Man of Steel – great cast, good story

I think I could spend another column writing about how bad Hangover 3 is, but I would rather do a dissertation on where I hope movies are going.
I was watching the Man of Steel for the 3rd or 4th time and I was trying to put my finger on why it felt a little less than it should. It has all the elements. Good cast – Russell Crowe is powerful as Jor-el, also known as Superman’s dad. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are curious as Ma and Pa Kent. The always fetching Amy Adams is Lois Lane and relative newcomer Henry Cavil is convincing as Clark Kent. It’s a strong cast.
Good story – not great – but good. Maybe told a few too many times, at least the introduction. Great technology available for special effects. We’ve come a long way from the days of George Reeves hovering by wires against a black backdrop. This cat flies.
I think there’s the problem. Back to that in a minute.
For the record, I was a big Superman fan. I never really embraced the Marvel family. I was DC all the way.
I liked their ideals. How they finished every comic instead of Marvel’s way of carrying it over.
Spiderman got it right.
Superman still seems to be looking for it.
There are several significant constructs in the Man of Steel story. The comic, not this model. This model takes a pretty narrow look at it all. If they make several with these characters maybe they can get into the meat and potatoes of the story. I wish they’d take an issue and film it.
We’ll see.
The problem I have with this film is it doesn’t seem to have a soul. I struggled with the last half hour. It reminded me of Transformers which was just irritating. They keep blowing things up and it makes no sense. I find the new digital special effects cold and obvious.
While there are certain things that are quite breathtaking they pile too much on.
The Man of Steel sure does appear to fly.
That’s cool.
The excess of destruction in the final scenes is tedious. It’s not that the Man of Steel is awful. It’s just not super. This may be a case of it getting better as the sequels come at us.
We’ll see.
As always, other opinions are welcome, but wrong. That’s it for this week. The cheque’s in the mail and I’m outta here. Paul.
