Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quiaff addressed speculation he is considering running to become the first Bay of Quinte member of provincial parliament.

Ina release Monday, Quaiff said it is not his intention to become an MPP and plans to continue focusing his efforts on serving the people of Prince Edward County as mayor.

“When I entered this office, I established priorities for my term, such as the redevelopment of our hospital, the promotion of our rural creative economy, the fight for community rights against wind turbine projects, and the creation of a financially sustainable municipality,” Quaiff said. “I am also deeply involved in two ongoing ad-hoc committees that are addressing real challenges facing our community – the development framework committee and the water and wastewater committee.”

Quaiff states he’s proud of the work being done to realize the priorities and overcome challenges.

“I’m thankful that our community gave me the opportunity to work on these issues,” he said. “The County is my home. It’s where I met my lovely wife, where we built our family, and where I plan to spend the rest of my days. I love our community and I have absolutely no interest in a political office that would take me away from it.”

Current MPP Todd Smith is representing the citizens of Hastings and Prince Edward counties. In the next election the boundaries change to mirror the new federal ridings.

Smith stated in July he will let his name stand for election in 2018 as the member of provincial parliament for the new Bay of Quinte riding.
