Mayor encourages accommodators to cancel bookings, offer lodgings to health care workers in need of self-isolating

On behalf of council, Mayor Steve Ferguson is requesting the County’s accommodators cancel bookings to the May long weekend – to offer lodging to front-line health care staff.

“I implore all operators of roofed accommodations – hotels and motels, bed and breakfast establishments, and short-term accommodations – to cancel all bookings from today until the May long weekend, if you have not done so already. I encourage you to consider offering your vacant accommodations to doctors, nurses, and other front-line health-care workers who want to self-isolate to protect their families.”

Council wants to discourage all non-essential travel in the community.

“Together, we must take responsibility to do everything in our power to ‘flatten the curve.’ Your cooperation is necessary and vital especially considering that Prince Edward County has a higher percentage of people over the age of 65, the demographic most at risk of getting very sick if they contract the virus.”

The offerings of lodgings have already begun throughout Facebook. Those looking for assistance of any kind, can seek help on the new ‘Caremongering PEC’ Facebook page

The mayor, in all social and official communication, and in a new video series this week, is encouraging all residents to do their part to get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If you have returned from travel outside of Canada, or if you travelled domestically through one of four airports in Canada accepting international arrivals, you MUST self-isolate immediately for 14 days. And if you are living with someone or picked someone up from the airport who falls into the above category, please self-isolate for 14 days as well.”

For the rest, “practice social distancing and wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, and use sanitizer. Remember: stay your distance; stay well.”

Not a bad idea for helping those who need it. Also, I just read that the City of Belleville is doing away with ‘bag tags” until this crisis has past. From what I have seen along some of our County roads, maybe PEC should consider a similar move?

This is a great step in the right direction and speaks to our PEC sense of community. I can only hope that the tourist parks (cottage developments and trailer parks, large and small) are also cancelling reservations and turning away people who show up. We need to discourage travel to the County from other towns and provinces at this time to protect our citizens, hospital and front line workers.
