Milford branch exemplifies the value of the Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Milford Branch Library continue a long tradition of community support for the public library in South Marysburgh.

The Milford library was started in 1951 through the efforts of Jeanne Minhinnick and Ann Farwell – former Toronto residents who operated a sheep ranch in South Bay. They personally donated 200 books, plus collected another 750 books from friends in Toronto – a great start to a library that would continue to serve the community for many years to come.

In the mid 1990s, it became obvious that a new building was needed, and the community came together again to raise the funds to open a new, accessible and bright building through innovative and truly unique events such as a Ponderama beach ball race and barn dances.

That same spirit of creativity and enthusiasm continues decades later as the Friends of the Milford Branch Library volunteer their time and energy in support of the branch.

They have organized several interesting events for this fall and winter.
On Monday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. Kathy McAlpine will join us to share about fascial stretch. You’ll learn what fascia is and why it’s essential to healthy movement, as well as what happens when it become tight and restricted. She’ll explain how Fascial Stretch Therapy can help reduce pain, restore balance and improve mobility. This is part of our Seniors Community Program project to bring health and wellness programs to branches across the County. All are welcome – register at peclibrary.org or call (613) 476-4130.

Saturday, Nov. 22 will see the return of the annual Christmas book, bake and – new this year – bling sale. Books, baked goods, and Christmas supplies and wrapping paper will be available for sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with all proceeds supporting the branch.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, drop in for a “Wrap it Up!” party. Get help with gift wrapping and enjoy the holiday spirit with friends and neighbours. Enjoy a story and craft, and snacks will be available as well. It’s sure to be a warm and welcoming day at the library.

A regular knitting group meets Tuesday mornings at the Milford branch from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Crafters bring their projects – any craft projects – to the library and spend time working on them and sharing in conversation and social time. All are welcome.

The Friends of the Milford Branch Library were excellent mentors for the Bloomfield Branch and generously shared their experiences and advice when the Bloomfield group was just starting up.

We truly cannot overstate the value of the Friends of the Library – their contributions really make a difference. If you are interested in giving some time to your local branch, drop in and inquire about the Friends of the Library or visit peclibrary.org/friends

Your best bet is to call the branch directly (613) 476-4130 and they can let you know if they need books. Thank you!

Do you need donations of books in excellent condition for your sale?
The Milford library speaks to the heart of what a library should and can be, a community centerpiece.
