Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis was the man of the hour Thursday as he delivered the first installment of federal Gas Tax Fund cheques to the municipalities he represents.
Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff was happy to receive $1,535,847, up from last year’s allotment of $1,462,712.
The County’s money is spent on roads, the mayor said.
“I was happy to hear that our County would be receiving more than last year’s funding through the federal Gas Tax program. Our County’s roads are the veins of our community. They are essential to maintaining our way of life and promoting economic development in the region. Maintaining roads is a high priority for our government so this expanded funding is a welcome investment in our community.”
At more than $2 billion each year across the country, the predictable, long-term funding can be used on more than concrete, pipes, roads and bridges. They can also connect people to their communities and allow them to be active participants, socially and economically.
Quinte West and Belleville also received increases on their cheques:
Belleville received $3,007,118 (2015-2016 allotment: $2,863,922); and Quinte West gained $2,619,903 (2015-2016 allotment: $2,495,146).
“Public investments in areas like infrastructure are crucial to drive economic growth and strengthen the middle class,” said Ellis. “Through the federal Gas Tax Fund the government of Canada is providing municipalities like Belleville, Quinte West, and Prince Edward County with flexible, predictable funding to address their biggest priorities, across a range of needs. Through our infrastructure investments we will help form the foundation of a more inclusive society – one that delivers stronger growth and a better quality of life for the middle class and those working hard to join it.”
