Hastings Prince Edward Public Health confirmed one new case of COVID-19 Friday.
The case is the only one currently active and HPEPH states it was confirmed Sept. 24 but the transmission cause is listed as pending. On public health’s website, the case is listed as in Belleville.
It is the first case in the region since Sept. 5 and brings the total of cases during the pandemic here to 53 (47 have recovered, there were five deaths).
Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson noted County residents have been fortunate with a low case count over the pandemic, but says the first new case in almost three weeks is a reminder.
“We can’t let our guard down in any way, shape or form. We must be prepared for anything that COVID-19 throws at us in the coming weeks and months… to ensure the virus doesn’t spread within our community, to our schools and long-term care homes, and as a result, overwhelm our hospital capacity.”
He also encourages seniors who usually go south for the winter to make other plans.
“Travelling to the United States this year would not be a wise decision, and may not even be an option given the travel restrictions put in place by the federal government. Please take the necessary steps to ensure you have proper accommodations this winter. Speak with friends or loved ones in case you need to call on them for support in the months ahead.”
Today the provincial government slapped tighter restrictions on restaurants and bars, and ordered strip clubs to close, in an effort to crackdown on outbreak clusters of COVID-19.
As of Saturday at 12:01, all food and drink establishments across the provice will have ‘last call’ at 11 p.m. and alcohol sales will be prohibited after midnight.
The measures come one week after the province slashed the number of people in private social gatherings to 10 indoors and 25 outdoors.
There were 409 new cases of the novel coronavirus announced on Thursday and on Friday, most in Toronto and Ottawa. The Kingston area has recorded 14 cases this month.
