County born Emily Cowan will take the helm of the Prince Edward County Chamber of Tourism and Commerce as its new executive director.

Gil Leclerc, chamber president, made the announcment Tuesday.

“Born and raised in Prince Edward County, Cowan brings to her new position experience in marketing, sales, bookkeeping and payroll administration at companies and organizations in the County and, previously, in the UK and Ireland,” said Leclerc.

As executive director, Cowan will be responsible for increasing Chamber membership; improving programs and member benefits; membership advocacy with financial, government and political organizations; and marketing and public relations.

“We are delighted to welcome Emily to this position,” he said. “Her business experience in the County as well as that in several positions in the UK will enable the Chamber to more effectively serve and expand its membership base.”

Leclerc said Cowan will also oversee the transition of the tourist board back to the County which is scheduled to take place in the new year.

“I’m excited and looking forward to the challenges of increasing and better serving the Chamber’s members,” said Cowan. “Prince Edward County is on the national and international map as a top destination with the opportunity to create a legacy for current and future enterprises, so the need for a full service Chamber of Commerce has never been greater.”

Cowan notes continued strong leadership from the board can provide sustainable support through innovative programs leveraging the County’s current exposure.

“Building on this momentum will create strong businesses that will provide the community with living wages, entrepreneurs with otherwise unobtainable benefits and future growth potential for all.”

Following the departure last fall of general manager Mike McLeod, the board was running the chamber.
