New water tower in Wellington’s skyline

By Sharon Harrison
The skyline of Wellington looks a little different today as the water tank part of the new water tower facility was hoisted into place – 55m above ground level.

Thursday was a calm day, which was needed, balmy and spring-like too, as a gentle whirring sound –with the occasional clanging of metal- took the vessel skyward to hug the newly-built concrete tower.

The process unfolded slowly, movement barely noticeable to the eye as the tank inched its way to the top of the tower, over a period of hours.

The tank is located beside the Wellington and District Community Centre on Belleville Street at First Avenue. It sits in the shadow of the current water tower, which is expected to be decommissioned and dismantled once the new tower is functioning in spring 2023.

The new water tower project also includes the installation of a permanent bulk water filling station at the site. This new station will replace the existing station on Beach Street and the temporary station at the Wellington and District Community Centre.

At a cost of $9 million, the tank is sized for present and future water demands, providing recommended pressures for future development and was funded in part by area-specific development charges
