Outbreaks at local nursing homes

Two nursing homes in Picton are battling influenza and stomach flu outbreaks.
H.J. McFarland Memorial Home reported the onset of an enteric (stomach flu) outbreak facility-wide this week, and Hallowell House reported onset of influenza B in all units except the Sunset Court wing.
Outbreaks are also reported this week for Hastings Manor and the Richmond Retirement Residence in Belleville, and Trent Valley Lodge in Trenton.
To prevent further transmission of the infection to others, administration at the homes are asking that people do not visit the facilities, unless necessary.
For people who must visit, administration recommends following best practices for hand hygiene to avoid contracting or transmitting the infections.
People with a cold or fever should avoid visiting any home.
Staff at the homes are assessing and modifying activities to reduce the risk of transmitting the infection among residents and staff.
