Update on this outing….Due to the forecast of extreme cold weather for Saturday, this all-day trip has been moved back 2 days (and 20 degrees warmer) to Monday, Feb. 15th.

Winter water birds, woodpeckers and the beauty of the beach will be the focus of nature lovers and those behind camera lenses this Saturday.

wild turkeys PNCounty Photographer Phil Norton will lead the charge. Norton runs County Outings – year-round guided tours and photography workshops based in the County but, regularly, also extending beyond the borders for retreats and trips.

His ‘Photography and Fitness’ events began with a core group in 2012.

“Along the way, we added food, friends and fun and a broader range of interests under the banner ‘County Outings’.

The next outing is set for Saturday, Feb. 13 involving a Lake Ontario shoreline excursion.

“From wild turkeys to swans, woodpeckers and chickadees in hand, maybe an eagle and a snowy owl, with some easy walking and shooting, probably winding up in Port Hope at the restaurant in the historic hotel.”

water duck PNParticipants will photograph nautical and maritime scenes close and he’s hoping for sunset photography from a wharf after their late lunch.

The group leaves Picton at 8 a.m. and will be at Presquile Park around 9:30. There is a $20 photography workshop fee, plus gas sharing, meal and shared park entrance fee. Bring an annual provincial park pass if you have one. Pack water and a snack (for yourself and the birds).

RSVP as soon as you can and get on the list for further updates by emailing phil@philnorton.com

I don’t think my car battery would be reliable in the minus 20’s. However, photographically speaking, the possibilities for this extreme cold are interesting, especially since there is open water, very little ice on rivers or the Great Lake which could result in some prize-winning “steam” shots. So if you go out on your own on Saturday, watch for that atmospheric condition as the sun comes up.
