Picton business loses $15,000 in crypto currency fraud

Prince Edward County Ontario Provincial Police are investigating an incident of fraud that cost a Picton business $15,000 in crypto currency.

The OPP received a report Thursday, Sept. 2, OPP) received a report of a fraud from a Picton noting it received a call from someone impersonating a fire inspector.

“The suspect fire inspector requested information from the business and advised that the suspect would be attending the business to inspect the premises,” said Aaron Miller, PEC OPP Community Safety Officer. “The suspect then advised the employees they were in violation and would be facing a significant fine. The suspect then requested a partial payment to avoid further repercussions. Employees transferred approximately $15,000 via crypto currency to the suspect.”

As the investigation continues, OPP remind business owners to ask questions prior to sending money.

“Should someone claim to be an inspector, ask for credentials. An ask for crypto currency should be a red flag,” said Miller.

The real question is why did the business figure it was ok to “pay off” the fire inspector under the table. Really sort of looks good on them.

What did they have crypto for in the first place? Incredible that such a brazen scam could work!

  3. Adam says:

More distressing is that the fraudster actually convinced a person who is capable and proficient at understanding and processing crypto currency.
