Plans, new name for Athol school

A draft preliminary floor plan for the proposed addition and renovations at Athol Central Public School, with an estimated budget of $781,000, was approved, contingent on Ministry of Education funding. Estimated costs cover enhancements for programs, accommodation and the site, as well as fees and contingencies.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District Board members approved recommendations to close South Marysburgh School and declare it surplus effective June 2011. Athol Central becomes a JK to Grade 8 school effective September 2011. The integration and transition process began in September 2010 with the formation of the Integration Committee.

Choose school’s new name
Over the past few months the Athol and South Marysburgh Centre School Integration Committee has received several suggestions for the name of the combined and renovated school.
The committee seeks public input to assist in making the final recommendation tot he Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board for final approval in the spring of 2011.
Participants filling out the form on the Athol Central School website are being asked to choose one of three names and decide whether the name should be followed by Public School or Community School. The three names listed are: Athol-South Marysburgh; Southern County and South Valley.
