Some of Prince Edward County’s favourite musicians are Playing Favourites at a Fundraising Concert for Picton United Church on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
“For over 200 years the Picton United Church has been a focal point of worship and community,” says Penny Kitchen, the church’s office administrator, and also a performer at the event. “It has housed, hosted and supported programs and events beyond estimate during those years and now faces many challenges – one of which is financial.”
Members of the church and the community will share their talent, accomplishment and experience during a two-hour program of solid music and genuine fun for the benefit and welfare of the Picton United Church. Local musicians include Penny, John and Roanna Kitchen, Judy Fraser and Bud Gregory, The Frere Brothers, Gavin Massey, Amy Rutherford, Kim Inch, Paul Johnson and Billy Ostrander (see poster).
Kitchen says other committees and groups are also planning and working on many different fund raising events and sales.
“It often takes the sensitivities of our artistic community to recognize and appreciate what is in our own back yard. We have so many fabulous people that live in Prince Edward County. The support so far for this concert has been amazing, but we really do need to remind the entire community about the importance of Picton United Church, not only as a church, but as a focal point of our community,” said Kitchen.
“Picton United has been a part of my life for four generations and she has indeed touched just about everyone in our community in one way or another – weddings, funerals, girl guides, scouts, Victorian teas, meetings, rehearsals, recordings, many different fund raising concerts for the hospital, Glenwood Cemetery; global catastrophes such as Tsunami, Haiti – the list is endless.
“Operating costs keep going up, memberships keep going down; not unlike many other churches. Picton United houses many community events because of her size, beautiful acoustics and decor. We need to keep this building as a center part of our community and everyone needs to know we need help in keeping the doors open so we can continue to serve our community.”
