Prince Edward OPP remind people to be cautious online following reports of an extortion scam over the past few weeks.
Victims have received emails containing their personal information, along with claims of possessing inappropriate videos and images. The scammer demands $2,000 in crypto currency, threatening to release the images and videos if the money is not received.
Police recommend people follow these tips to avoid falling victim to fraud:
– Pump the brakes and ask more questions
– Ask for credentials
– Listen to the inner voice that says “this doesn’t sound right”
– Be weary of any request for cash or cryptocurrency – Be cautious of the sense of urgency
– Do not be rushed in to sending money
Fraudsters frequently target vulnerable individuals. To help prevent victimization, share this information, especially with those who may be at risk.
