Premier Ford confirms snap provincial election call

Premier Doug Ford confirmed this morning he will call an early provincial election next Wednesday, stating he needs a new mandate to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump.

“I’ll be seeing the lieutenant governor on Tuesday,” said Ford, at a press conference for a transit expansion project in Brampton, Friday.

“We need a mandate from the people to fight against Donald Trump’s tariffs, the attack he’s coming against our families, our businesses, our communities,” said Ford.

The U.S. president has threatened to implement 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods as early as Feb. 1. The premier stated the province is prepared to spend tens of billions of dollars to protect Ontario’s economy.

The provincial election date is to be Feb. 27 – more than a year ahead of the June 2026 scheduled election.

In the Bay of Quinte riding, NDP candidate Amanda Robertson and Green Party candidate Lori Borthwick will face newly-elected PC MPP Tyler Allsopp, who won the by-election in October, after long-time PC MPP Todd Smith stepped down.

Liberal candidate Sean Kelly confirmed to local media he will not be running. The Bay of Quinte Liberals have not announced a candidate.
