The public is invited to observe the Dec. 6th Vigil on Friday for the National Day for Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

December 6th is the National Day for Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It was declared (unanimously) by the House of Commons two years after 14 women were killed at L’Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal in 1989.

Picton’s event is being hosted by Alternatives for Women, which provides second stage housing and free, confidential counselling for women who have experienced domestic violence.

“Each year we gather to share grief, anger, and determination to make change,” said Holly Baines, AFW Training & Public Engagement Coordinator. “We lay roses in memory of those 14 women, and another for the women killed since.

“This year we will also be laying a rose in remembrance of Shannan Leigh Hickey, who lived in Belleville until her partner killed her earlier this year. Femicides like these are not new. Like intimate partner violence, they are an epidemic.”

The public is invited to join in, at 5 p.m. at Benson Park, Picton. In case of poor weather, meet at the Picton Town Hall across the street.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, you can reach Alternatives for Women on its crisis line: 613 476 2787. Click here to visit the website
