QHC staff 99% vaccinated; 30 people no longer employed

Thirty of Quinte Health Care’s 2,400 staff and physicians who have chosen not to get vaccinated, or decided not to provide information on their vaccination status, are no longer with the organization.

Vice-president, people and strategy, Susan Rowe, in a statement late Friday, noted 99 per cent of the staff has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

“Our first obligation as a health care organization is to maximize the protection for patients and QHC team members.  Over the past eight months we have taken a progressive and supportive approach to encourage vaccination, including giving people easy access to the vaccine and extensive information and education from a wide variety of credible sources,” said Rowe. “Our mandatory policy was developed with our medical leadership and was an important next step to protect our patients, staff and communities.”

Quinte Health Care set an Oct. 31 deadline for full vaccination. Prior to implementing the vaccine mandate, 90 per cent of staff and physicians were already fully vaccinated.

The 30 individuals are from across various departments at all four hospitals, and include non-clinical and clinical roles.

Rowe stated QHC is thankful for the many contributions the departing team members have made during their time at QHC and wished them well.

She also said they are grateful for their dedicated staff, physicians and volunteers, and for the ongoing support of the communities they serve.

The loss of doctors and staff is very concerning, particularly at a time of crisis. This scenario will greatly affect a huge number of patients. It seems to me that the names of doctors who we will no longer have access to should be listed as folks have to try to get care in a system that already has a waiting list to get a doctor.

I wonder if the unvaccinated doctors could perhaps operate out of their own clinic for the like-minded patients who also are against vaccinating? That way some patients could access care.

I applaud QHC for their recognition of the fact that their first priority is to their health and protection of patients and staff. The fact that 30 staff members have left the employ of QHC as they refused to abide by the mandate was caused by their decsion, which is their right but in the larger picture, their are consequences to individual decisions. The taxpayer pays for Ontario healthcare and the public needs to be assured that when they are at their most vulnerable (ill and hospitalized) their are protocols in place to ensure their condition is not worsened by exposure to COVID 19.
