Prince Edward County’s sixth annual Relay for Life got under way Sunday with a rally at the Regent Theatre.
Relay is an inspirational, overnight fundraising event designed to bring the community together to celebrate life, and fight cancer. When the sun came up on last year’s fifth annual event the more than 500 participants learned that more than one million dollars ($1,012,000) had been raised over the past five years in Prince Edward County.
The 2014 event raised $172,552.32 and this year’s event is on its way with $5,510 raised toward a $190,000 goal for this year’s event, June 5, at the Picton fairgrounds.
At Sunday’s rally, teams registered and learned of new events and plans, including the earning of ‘Relay Bucks’ for participation during the event. A draw will determine the winner of a kayak.
The afternoon also featured live entertainment from Instant Rivalry and The Frere Brothers.
Up next is a charity auction by event partners, the Picton Kinsmen, set for Saturday, April 18th at the Picton Arena Hall. Doors open at 5:30p.m. live auction starts at 7p.m. Silent, live and loonie auctions, 50/50 draw, raffles, light luncheon provided. Admission is $10 at the door.
Prince Edward County’s sixth annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life event will be held June 5-6 at the Picton fairgrounds.
