Rehabilitation of County Road 4 (Ben Gill) bridge to begin July 4

Work to fix a single-span bridge on County Road 4 is expected to begin Monday, July 4.

The bridge, located on County Road 4 approximately 1 km east of Highway 62  will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic will be detoured around the bridge via Jericho and Doxsee roads. The project is expected to take three months to complete. Through traffic destined to and from Picton will have the option to use Highway 62 and County Road 1 as an alternate route during the bridge construction.

The $944,639 tender from A2Z Civil was the lowest but an additional $470,000 was needed from the Canada Community Building Fund to cover design costs incurred to date, contract administration, project management and contingency costs. That fund had an unallocated surplus of $712,801.

The project includes removal and replacement of the existing concrete deck, waterproofing, asphalt overlay, guiderail replacement and other ancillary concrete repairs.

Access to driveways in the area will be provided at all times during construction. Garbage and recycling pick up will be maintained; however, this may require A2Z Civil to pick up garbage and recycling bins and move them to an alternate pick-up location. A2Z Civil will return empty recycle bins to the end of residents’ driveways at the end of each pick-up day.

The detour option of County Road 1 to Highway 62 probably should be emphasized as the preferable one. Two pickup trucks meeting need to put their wheels on the narrow shoulder of Jericho Road. There is no way this road should be encouraged as a detour.

Doxsee is a pothole laden mess but slightly wider. Continuing to County Road 14 and left to Highway 62 bypasses Jericho Road and makes more sense.
