Residents encouraged to prevent flood damage

The County’s Municipal Control Group (MCG) is requesting County residents act immediately to protect their property against flooding.

“We encourage residents to take precautionary measures as soon as possible if they are prone to flooding,” said Mayor Steve Ferguson. “Planning ahead and carrying out some simple home maintenance will help reduce the risks.”

Environment Canada is forecasting significant rain and higher than average temperatures over the next 72 hours. Recent high winds and snow accumulation caused drifting snow and abnormal snow loads on roof and around houses. Residents should seek out any supplies they may require to protect their property. Clearing snow from roofs and foundations may help to prevent property damage. Ensure sump pumps are operational and carry water away from your home.

The County is encouraging all residents to contact their insurance companies if they have incurred costs or damages related to the winter storm. The municipality is investigating the possibility of disaster-relief funding from other levels of government. Updates will be provided as they become available.

Municipal staff continue to perform snow removal and drainage clearing. Administrative offices are closed for the holidays but staff are monitoring the customer service line at 613.476.2148 extension 1023 and email info@pecounty.on.ca.

The MCG, which started meeting during the blizzard warnings, continues to meet on a regular basis and remains in contact with local authorities including Quinte Conservation. The MCG group includes the Mayor, CAO, fire chief, clerk, director of finance, the Chief Building Official and the County’s Mayor Media and Communications Coordinator.
