The municipality will move forward with a dedication ceremony officially naming George Wright Boulevard to the new Picton Foodland development, and later providing access from Loyalist Parkway through the new subdivision to Talbot Street.
George Wright Boulevard was named after Second World War veteran George Wright, one of Prince Edward County’s most distinguished soldiers, first with the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment. He was also among 13 members of the ‘Devil’s Brigade’ a legendary unit created in 1942 in Montana, composed of Canadian and American soldiers, originally as a parachute unit that would land behind enemy lines and sabotage installations. Instead, it became a versatile assault group with a reputation for specialized reconnaissance and raiding.
Wright was also a member of the Picton police force for 25 years where he eventually became Detective Sergeant.
He died in December 2018 at age 98.
The dedication ceremony for the new road name is expected to take place in the spring of 2021.

An absolute true definition to the word “HERO”. You might never have known his valour and commitment to God and Country from his lips! So wonderful to see him recognized in our community, a very positive move to have done this, truly, I will remember him!!
That is the most wonderful news!
This is such a fitting tribute. I worked at the IGA (the present Sobeys) back in the late 80’s early 90’s and met George at the coffee bar. He would meet up with all the old boys and tell stories and share memories of days gone by.
The naming of a street after Mr. George Wright is a fitting tribute to a legendary man who fought for this country and became an outstanding member of our community throughout his life. Hats off to the County in recognizing such a distinguished gentleman in this manner.
A fine tribute to an outstanding Canadian and a well-loved member of the community.
