Rob Legge qualifies for World Gran Fondo Championships

Biking to a big win Sunday in Victoriaville, Quebec, the County’s Rob Legge has again qualified for the world championships in Italy – this time he plans to attend.
In Quebec, he won his age category (70-74) at the qualifying race for the World Gran Fondo Championships at Trento, Italy, in September. He finished at 3:31:43 on a challenging 103 km race.
Legge, of Cressy, cycled his way to the world championships last year but decided travel to Europe may not be safe during the pandemic. Still, it was a goal he met as he has been cycling for more than 18 years.
“The ultimate goal is in 2023,” he said, “to qualify for the World Gran Fondo event in Glasgow, Scotland” – in the age 75-79 category.
Legge rides as much as he can, frequently travelling 100km plus in workouts and events each year, including local rides and the annual Ride to Conquer Cancer, raising funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital.
A Gran Fondo is a type of long-distance road cycling ride originating in Italy in 1970 and roughly translates into English as “Big Ride.”
