School board – support staff reach tentative deal

A tentative contract deal reached Tuesday could avoid another work to rule campaign by Hastings and Prince Edward educational support staff.
The deal between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1022 and the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) is expected to be ratified in the coming weeks.
Last fall’s work to rule campaign resulted in complaints about garbage-strewn hallways, and other issues in local schools. The union had been without a contract for the past 19 months and held a rally at the education centre in Belleville Tuesday.
“We are pleased to reach a tentative deal last evening,” said Lee-Ann Evans, CUPE Local 1022 president. “On behalf of the bargaining team, I would like to thank our members for their support and dedication through this process.”
Represented are secretaries, office administrators, educational assistants, custodial workers, early childhood educators, library techs and maintenance workers.
School board chairman Dwayne Inch, in a statement Wednesday, said he is pleased with the tentative agreement.
“Both teams negotiated for a lengthy period of time in a respectful manner and came to agreeable terms. CUPE support staff play important roles in educating students, and we appreciate their contributions to student achievement and well-being.”
