Second grandparent scammed by con artist

Another Picton resident has been victimized by a scam known as the “Emergency or Grandparent Scam”.
In the typical scenario, a resident receives a phone call from a con-artist claiming to be one of his or her grandchildren.  The caller states they are in some kind of trouble and needs money immediately. Typically, they claim being in a car accident, trouble returning from a foreign country or they need bail money.

In this particular case, on Wednesday, July 25, the victim, a 73-year-old female, received a call from a man stating he was her grandson.  The suspect told her he was in jail in Quebec and needed bail money.  The scenario continued with the suspect having a second male speak with the victim.  The second male stated he was the suspect’s lawyer.  The victim believed the scam and sent $1,900 through a Western Union money transfer service. She became suspicious when she was contacted the next day by the suspect who asked her to send more money.  She did not fall for the second attempt and attended the OPP detachment to report the scam.

A scam with almost identical details was reported to Picton OPP on June 26 where a 79-year-old female lost $1200.

Prince Edward OPP reminds residents to be wary of any such calls and if they are suspicious in any way to hang up, and contact the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to report it.  To learn more about this topic visit the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre’s website at   www.antifraudcentre.ca
