Seeking food solutions in Consecon Saturday

The Consecon Area Ratepayers Association, Inc (CARA) is hosting a public forum Saturday, July 8th, for people who have an interest in securing improved food access, and building a stronger, healthier regional community.

The Consecon United Church has donated its hall for discussion of possible solutions to the food-desert and food security problems that exist in north west Prince Edward County. Beginning at 10 a.m. there will be a presentation by PEC Fresh, A Good Food Market, a community driven project running in Picton. It allows all residents to have access to nutritious food supplies at affordable prices.

Guest speakers from PEC Fresh and the Prince Edward Learning Centre Robyn Cakebread and Kathy Kennedy, will be discussing a Partner Market, which aims to provide stigma-free in-person and delivery access to a variety of produce choices thanks to community volunteers.

Anyone wanting to find out more about how they can serve or be served by this kind of initiative are invited (CARA membership and residence status is not required).

According to the Community Food Assessment (CFA) recently released by HPE Public Health, people reported that “it was generally difficult to find healthy options at food banks and community organizations, and particularly so for convenience stores.”

Toby Toth, president of CARA, notes limited options for sourcing nutritious food (groceries) in the villages of Consecon or Carrying Place or in the surrounding rural area, residents must travel to shop.

“With near-nil public transportation for residents to get to Wellington, Picton, Brighton or Trenton, personal vehicle travel (and associated fuel/operating costs) is required, as is the approximately one hour of round-trip travel time for every trip made.

Would we not be better served by finding food source solutions closer to home? Would this not benefit all residents, but especially those neighbours and friends who face added roadblocks?”
