Closures of Skyway Bridge planned for May 21-22; 27-28

Several full closures of Highway 49 over the Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge are planned for the following dates and times – all from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.:

• From 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 22
• From 9 p.m. Monday, May 27,  to 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 28
In case of any schedule delays due to weather or construction operations, the closure will be
rescheduled to take place same times Tuesday, May 28 to Wednesday, May 29.

The first closure is intended for the installation of the modular expansion joint at the north abutment
of the bridge and for the epoxy injection of the Modular Expansion Joint at the north abutment of the bridge.
The second closure is intended to flip traffic to the southbound lane (west side of the bridge).

During these time periods the highway will be closed, and no traffic will be permitted to pass over the bridge.

The bridge is an 850m long, high-level bridge carrying two lanes of Highway 49 traffic over the Bay of Quinte. The bridge was constructed circa 1967 and was in need of major repairs. The work included the complete replacement of the steel girders and deck, rehabilitation of the piers, and reconstruction of the abutments. The bridge deck will be widened slightly and will include 1.5 m shoulders on each side.

Work began in 2018 with preparations for each segment of the bridge and was to be replaced over five years. It is expected to be opened in the summer of 2024.
