CHEERS! from the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation for a donation of $200 from the Sheba’s Island Annual Summer Picnic. The picnic, which is entering its 24th year, brings past and present residents of Sheba’s Island together for a day of games, food and togetherness to meet and re-meet neighbours. Pictured here on July 20, 2011, is Dusty Graham, resident of Sheba’s Island, Anna Marie Ferguson, executive director of the PECMH Foundation and Marlene Tompkins, organizer and resident of Sheba’s Island. A poetic account of the day, by Jacqueline Chambers:
Old and new friends gather, hugs and kisses all around
Camaraderie, glad handing, such a cheerful sound.
Mid August, our calendars are marked with the date,
For our annual Island Picnic, we all eagerly await!
Pat has hung Wilf’s rosary in a most honourable place,
Ensuring favourable weather prevailing upon our happy space.
Jerry, Marlene and Greg each took their turn at the grill,
While hungry merrymakers eagerly awaited the usual thrill
Of seasoned sausage, back bacon, Hagerman’s corn on the cob,
Yes our Sheba’s Island neighbours were a hungry mob!
Joan, Dusty and Ellie, at the entrance did warmly meet
All Islanders who wandered in from the car lined street,
Carrying their goodies, chairs and coolers in full tow
Each year our crowd seems to grow, grow and grow!
Thanks for the donations to the welcoming hat,
Picton Memorial Hospital received a portion of that.
In his inimitable manner, Mayor Dusty welcomed all,
“Irish Road Bowling’s the game – pylons, partners and a ball.”
Bob Abbott volunteered to be the keeper of the score.
When it came to competition, the partners made quite a “Roar”!
Cars and trucks were re-routed, some even made to stop!
We were all grateful none complained that we carried a wee drop.
Salads, casseroles, platters, the buffet was as usual Great!
Each and every person amply filled their plate.
On to rich desserts…all decadent to be sure.
Today no calories counted, the figures would be a blur!
As our evening wound down, Bill’s squeeze-box sounds sublime,
Welcomed the evening’s sunset, as we soon lost track of time.
A crackling bonfire in the background, threw warm, inviting sparks.
As we packed up our gear and headed home in the near dark.
Thanks again to one and all who celebrated for a wee while,
In the community of Sheba’s Isle friendship is never out of style!
To each and every one of you who came or were not able
Those absent were sorely missed at our summer table.
May good health prevail, rich adventures be yours,
Until we gather again in our Sheba’s Island outdoors!
