Smith’s ‘Raise a glass to Ontario Act’ cuts winery/cidery red tape

After two years of consulting with brewers and vintners across Ontario, Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Todd Smith’s bill to amend the Liquor Control Board Act has been introduced in the legislature. Smith’s ‘Raise a Glass to Ontario Act’ is designed to cut red tape for brewers and wineries operating in Ontario and is expected to give a helping hand to wineries and cideries in Prince Edward County.

For Smith, the bill is the end of a long road that started with a meeting with some local winery owners back in early 2012.

“Wineries in Prince Edward County are a major part of the economy,” Smith said. “The more we can do to help them grow, help them sell wine and help them get into restaurants, the more it’s going to create jobs in the County. Raise a Glass to Ontario is a step in that direction.”

The bill, introduced Monday in the legislature, eliminates transportation regulations, cuts warehousing red tape and allows wineries and breweries to sell the products of other wineries or breweries at their on-site stores.

“Todd Smith has understood the challenges that our wineries face”, said Hillary Dawson, President of the Wine Council of Ontario. “Todd’s bill acknowledges this by tackling the regulations that can restrict their ability to grow their contact with the customer.   This will be another step in the modernization of the regulatory framework around our industry.”

“I’ve visited almost every winery in the County,” said Smith. “I’ve talked to breweries, cideries and distillers in the County. We make great products but we’ve also made it hard to get them the shelf space and restaurant listings they deserve. I’m hoping that the legislature raises a glass to Ontario and helps the great products we make right here at home.”
