PEC Sports Hall of Fame ‘long overdue’

Hugh Parliament, on behalf of founding members of the Prince Edward County Sports Hall of Fame, will address council this afternoon.
“The committee believes this is long overdue,” said Parliament in his report to council. “There is a great deal of history in sport from the past in Prince Edward County. We believe it is time to honour those achievements.”
He will seek permission to locate a PEC Sports Hall of Fame on the east wall of the Taskforce Lounge in the Essroc Centre, Wellington. His request is to be referred to staff for a report back to a committee of the whole meeting.
Parliament said the purpose of the hall is to honour individuals who have obtained prominence or distinction in any field of sport as a representative from Prince Edward County. Recognition includes a plaque and a short history to be displayed on the wall.
The group will also request permission for one-time use of the arena’s main hall for its first induction ceremony, Oct. 27, 2012. Induction into the hall would be an annual event. Discussion is under way with Prince Edward Collegiate Institute to honour its athletes an an annual basis – remaining in place for one year.
Founding members of the committee include Parliament; Leo Finnegan, Lyle Vanclief, Dr. Leroy Hall, James Hurst, Joe Skratt, Pat Guernsey, Stephanie Roth, Lisa Lindsey, Bruce Bell and Don Stanton.

Congratulations to all involved in taking the initiative to establish a Sports Hall of Fame. It is long overdue. There are many many deserving County residents that should be recognizd for their participation in sports.
