Students evacuate to arena due to a gas odour at the school

UPDATE: The school has notified parents and guardians that board officials received an update about how the gas odour got into the school. It was determined the air exchange unit ingested external air due to high winds in the area, resulting in the gas odour spreading throughout the school.

Students and staff will return to class Friday morning.

Students at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute (PECI) are evacuating to the Picton arena due to a gas odour in the school.

Everyone is safe and the fire department is on scene.

School staff are supervising students as they walk to the arena.

The Hastings and Prince Edward School Board is advising parents and caregivers not to go to the arena until after 1 p.m. to allow everyone to get to the arena and for staff to take attendance.

Dismissal will happen at normal time from the arena for students who are not picked up early. School staff will stay with students. Buses will pick up at the arena at normal time then proceed to homes from there. Two email/SMS messages have been sent to PECI families.
