Swooping around the County

Departing as quickly as they arrived within a few moments, hundreds, maybe thousands, of low-flying birds were seen in Wellington and Bloomfield this week. Likely starlings, the swooping swath ducked and dove, twisting and turning in a gracefully synchronized phenomenon known as a murmuration. It’s not fully known to scientists why they do it, or how so many birds can fly so close together at speed without collision. Some note grouping together offers safety in numbers, warmth and to exchange information, such as good feeding areas. – Sharon Harrison photo
