Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis launched the Bay of Quinte Canada 150 Literacy Challenge by reading to local students.

Prince Edward County students are invited to take the Bay of Quinte Canada 150 Literacy Challenge.

Neil Ellis, Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte, is challenging all local students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 to read 150 pieces of literature on Canadian heritage and culture.

This may include books, short stories and media or magazine articles (online or hard copy). The criteria is that children must read the material, or have it read to them.

“This challenge is positive in so many ways,” said Barbara Sweet PEC Libraries CEO. “Children will learn more about Canadian history and culture, hone their reading skills and frequent their local library.”

Sweet notes the library gives priority to Canadian content when purchasing “so I don’t think participants will have any difficulty finding 150 great reads in any of our six branches.”

In order to be eligible, material is required to be written by a Canadian author, or otherwise emphasize Canadian heritage and culture.

Participants are asked to record the name of the author and title of publications read on a supplied form.

The forms are available at all the County library branches, along with advice on age appropriate Canadian materials for children and their families.

Visit the PEC Libraries website for special events featuring Canadian authors and Canada 150 events, or call 613-476-5962.
