Budget Environmental Disposal Inc, of Hamilton, was the winning bidder of nine companies vying to demolish the former Wellington arena.
Council awarded the $196,902 contract Tuesday night in the next step toward the affordable housing project by the Prince Edward County Affording Housing Corporation (PECAHC).
The demolition will make way for the construction of a 36-unit affordable housing development comprised of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units and four three-bedroom affordable family townhomes for occupancy in the early fall of 2024.
The tender submissions ranged from Budget’s at $174,250 to $778,000 (both plus HST) from a Belleville company.
Work is expected to begin March 17. County staff is also scheduling an information session in Wellington, in addition to meeting with immediate neighbours to outline the demolition process and address concerns.
Staff is also completing an inventory of items contained in the structure to determine what may be salvageable, and make arrangements for decontamination, preservation, and storage.

“The tender submissions ranged from $174,250 to $778,000 …” strongly suggests either that the bidders had wildly differing interpretations of the bid documents, or that the bid documents had particularly imprecise requirements as to scope.
I hope that “Budget” can actually do the job on time and on budget. Looking at the range of bid amounts, I must wonder if this is just too good to be true.
